The Great Urgency  (Chapter 12 Verses 31-51)

The midnight hour (vv29-30. All the preparation speaks of haste (v11). This is an element missing from gospel preaching today, a most serious issue. The Egyptians felt the sense of urgency (v33). A bit too late for those who didn’t leave with the Hebrews. I fear that many in our Western society will likewise leave it too late. But what an indictment lies against the church, that fails to warn people that the appointed time is very short (1Corinthians 7:29). That fails to warn this godless society of its pending doom. There is certainly blood on the hands of some preachers, some churches (Ezekiel 3:18). But there was no blood on the hands of Moses, he warned them repeatedly. They had many a knock on the door of their hearts, many warnings. Divine sovereignty does not remove human responsibility. They did not believe what God said. The wages of sin is yet death (Romans 6:23). The day of the Lord looms, a fearful, fearful day (Zephaniah 1:14-18). And so I urge you to respond to God’s word now! There is no time for leisurely speculation and consideration about these matters, the midnight hour is close, death lurks in the shadows. To trifle with the urgent issues of salvation is a foolish business indeed. You need to be preapared to stand before God, now is the accepted time says God (2Corinthians 6:2). Some leave church services having heard to gospel with the attitude, I’ll think more about it when I get home, or next week, when I’m older. What if you didn’t get home, what if you’re not given next week or get to be older? Now! Is the midnight hour, hurry, hurry to Jesus, he will save you! Only he can (John 14:6). Today God is speaking to you, you have no guarantee you will hear his voice tomorrow.

The reaction of Pharaoh and his Egyptian people was of fear and superstition (v30). There has been no spiritual change. They still will not and do not believe. Judgment does not change people, it is not meant to, it is what it is, judgment (Revelation 16:9). What a difference with the jailor in Philippi, “the jailer called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas. Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household” (Acts 16:29-31). All the king’s self-confidence and brashness has gone, shattered. But the reaction is not of faith. Those of Israel who believed, took God at his word were ready to leave. This is the reaction of faith. What about you? Are you ready to forsake the world with all its charms, are you ready to forsake all and go with Jesus? Are you living daily in preparation of the coming Saviour? “Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.’ And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’ Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour” (Matthew 25:1-13). You are warned, you know the hour when he will come, but he is coming, soon. What is the difference between the two funerals, of the believer and the unbeliever? The only difference is grace, free, sovereign, saving grace, that’s all. God calls and we come, we obey unhesitatingly. The summons is here issued for you to repent and believe the gospel. Your sin makes your death certain (Hebrews 9:27). God’s covenant of grace provides you with all you need to be saved. Faith in the Lord Jesus that will judtify you for time and for eternity. There is no more time for pondering, hurry, it is the midnight hour, hurry into the arms of Jesus and you will be saved!
