Notes on Christian Warfare (10)

“Fighting the Good Fight”

The way, the truth and the life!

The Rulers & Authorities  (Ephesians Chapter 6 Verses 10-20)

Our struggle is not simply against flesh and blood, enough though that may be. We have the pressures of a godless society to cope with. We believe in the personality and power of Satan. He is the head of an organised kingdom of evil. I emphasise the word organised. His insidious, deceptive operations must be seen the back of men, nations, and world events. It’s not hard to see some of his triumphs in Western society today. The spiritual blindness, the godless humanism, and moral dissolution. The greatest of those being men are left with no sense of their eternally derelict state. Evil is a reality. It power’s factual, objective, something outside of ourselves. We are not talking about personality defects. We are talking about personal evil that is not explained in a human, biological, psychological way. Hence, the spiritual warfare we are engaged in (v12). This war’s not a clash of human personalities or philosophies, even between belief and unbelief. Though these means are used by the dark powers. No, we are against an omnipresent, persistent, sleepless malignity of evil forces. The word of God is clear this world order is under the sway of the evil one (1John 5:19; Revelation 12:12). The entire world’s ethos is contrary to God and we are urged not to allow ourselves to be seduced by it. Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world – the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life – comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever” (1John 2:15-17).

Our patterns and mindsets can so easily be squeezed into the world’s mold without us noticing. So we have to take deliberate countering measures, “do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:2). We need to remind ourselves that the world hasn’t just forgotten God, it has rejected him. This is what the apostle Paul means by a spirit of, or attitude of lawlessness (2Thessalonians 2:3-4; 2John 7). The world’s activity is an organised kingdom of evil with operational agents, both human and spirit agents. All who are actively working against God. And even some who profess an allegiance to God. Their main objective, of course, is not us but Christ, though Satan hates us as he hates Christ. He is intent on disturbing and destroying all who belong to Christ. With his Machiavellian schemes, he will, given the chance, use us to harm God’s people and work. Then when we have served his purpose he will cast us off without mercy or reward. Just as he did with Judas (Matthew 27:3-4). However, in spite of the complexities and activities of evil, we must keep in mind that he, Satan, and his kingdom’s already defeated. And so we use the whole armour of God and without fear, we stand.
