Kept by Power: (Chapter 1 Verses 3-12)
The Christian’s glorious hope of a heavenly inheritance could not be more secure, it is real, it is reserved, and it is ready waiting for you, kept by God himself (v5). Now there is not a security firm in the world that can offer such protection. The best names, with the best staff and technology could never guarantee fully to protect your property. They have to protect themselves by taking out insurance cover, in case it goes wrong on them. But God’s security system is fail-safe, his almighty power backs it up (v5). The word kept here is a military term which accompanies the word power. In the midst of the enemies that seek to rob you of your inheritance, persecutors, the world with all its lure and charm, the devil with his temptations, not to mention our own flesh, our sinful passions, and a myriad of other things. There is plenty of them, yet in the midst of them all, God is keeping your inheritance, guarding it for you. You will not be tricked, conned, enticed, or shamed out of your inheritance. God’s almighty power works in and upon and beyond our faith, around, above and beyond our enemies. He kept Daniel in the den? The three Hebrews lads in the furnace? He kept Job from Satan’s onslaught? He kept Peter in spite of his denials? He kept Paul in all his hardships (2Corinthians 1.8-9; 2Corinthians 6.4-5; 2Corinthians 12.9-10). Without his power we would all of us, be overwhelmed and robbed of our salvation.
That is why this military term is used here. God has posted sentinels if you like, all round us, like sentries guarding a castle. But Peter does not mean here God uses our faith, no the other way round, it is our faith trusting in his guarding, his protecting almighty power to do its job. And the aim of such protection? The final outcome? Salvation! Full, final, glorious, consummate salvation. All that God has promised us! Eureka! That is our incorruptible inheritance, safely kept in heaven, all ready, complete, waiting to be unveiled. “In just a little while my child”, God’s Spirit says to you in effect, “it will be all over, all the suffering, no more tears, no more hurt, or pain, all will be glory, I have it all here waiting for you, you know I speak the truth, just go on, just trust me, each step of the way” (Revelation 7.14-16). In a little while beloved God will draw back the curtain and the immensity of the riches he has for you will be unveiled. Whatever you are going through today as a child of God, Jesus knows all about it, he understands, he loves you. Trust him to keep you, put your hand in his again and walk.
