Any idol or unmortified lust will clip the wings of prayer, and intercept the return of it, “the Lord’s hand is not shortened that it cannot save; neither is his ear heavy that it cannot hear. But your iniquities have separated between you and your God; and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear” (Isaiah 59:1-2). “Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face: should I be enquired of at all by them? Therefore speak unto them, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Every man of the house of Israel that setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to the prophet; I the LORD will answer him that cometh according to the multitude of his idols” (Ezekiel 14:3-4). “And shall I be enquired of by you, O house of Israel? As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I will not be enquired of by you” (Ezekiel 20:31). “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me” Psalm 66:18). The man that has his idols set up in his heart, grieves the Spirit, who helps our infirmities in prayer. If he has any pleasure in approaching unto God, yet he has no pleasure in God; he doesn’t come to him as his exceeding joy, but comes only morning and evening in a passing, formal way, as you would with someone you do not really care for. That in reality is the sum of their prayer lives. Is it any wonder God does not regard their prayers?
